Taking the Uncertainty Out of Oral Surgery: How to Prepare

Posted in Blog

Sometimes the need for oral surgery is unavoidable. No one looks forward to surgery, but the results will get you smiling every time. Here at your friendly Downtown Vancouver Orthodontist, we believe that preparation is key to any procedure.

Here are four things you can do to help you have the smoothest experience in our surgery chair:

Knowledge is Power

H.P. Lovecraft once wrote that “the oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown”. That sentiment remains true to this day, especially when it comes to surgery. Before your appointment, sit down with your orthodontist and feel free to ask any questions that you may have. They will guide you through the process. You’ll find that it’s not so intimidating once you have a good grasp of what will be happening.

Set Up a Ride

Surgery, even oral surgery, takes a toll on your body. Anesthesia of any kind will affect your reaction time and impair your driving. Even nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, will diminish your judgement enough that it could pose a problem out on the open road. Avoid the risk and make sure you organize a ride for yourself for after the procedure. Reach out to friends or family, or take advantage of public transportation.

Sedation and a full belly just don’t mix. Not fasting could result in a rare but dangerous complication called aspiration. If you are being sedated, you will need to fast completely from at least midnight before your surgery. If you absolutely need to take medication before your surgery, you can take some small sips of water. Otherwise, stay away from food and drink completely.

Give Yourself Time

Arriving early will help keep your stress levels down and give you time to fill out any last-minute paperwork. This will also give you a chance to ask any remaining questions that may have popped up since you last spoke with your orthodontist. Take this time to breathe, relax, and catch up on the latest gossip magazines.

So there you have it, four methods to help you through your surgery experience. We will do our best to keep you comfortable and informed – just keep focused on the beautiful smile you will have at the end of the day!
